Hydrogen gas monitoring

H2 sensors can successfully identify even low concentrations of gas, such as the presence of a leak in a pipe. The innovative hydrogen sensor, designed by FAU researchers, consists of tiny particles called superparticles that make hydrogen visible to the naked eye without power or sophisticated equipment. The superparticles are between 1 and 10 microns in size, with a micron equivalent to a thousandth of a millimeter, and incorporate a purple indicator dye called lapis lazuris. When they come in contact with hydrogen, the molecules in the dye react in two different stages and change color significantly. If the sensor turns pink, it indicates a hydrogen leak. If the hydrogen is still leaking and the sensor is in contact with a lot of hydrogen, it becomes colorless. Immediate response makes leaks visible and allows them to be discovered in real time. Another advantage of innovative hydrogen sensors is their small size, making them suitable for many different scenarios, such as pipe coating.
