Not all ships are required to install a fixed gas detection system. But cargo pump rooms or coolers use 4 gas monitors to protect them from harmful gas buildup.

Portable gas detector

Another option is to use portable gas monitors, worn by staff, used to test an area immediately before entering it.

Different gases occupy confined Spaces in different ways. If there's no oxygen in the space it can quickly cause you to lose consciousness.
